Another shortcut to sesame sauce: I was in our local Japanese market the other day and saw something that looked like sesame seed powder. Sure enough, when I asked the cashier what it was, it turned out that it was indeed white sesame seed powder. Though I haven't yet tried it (I plan on trying it this weekend), this should also serve as a good base for the sesame sauce as well.

OK, a few notes from me regarding this:
1.) You can make this with chicken or pork too, but you need to remember that chicken and/or pork must be cooked completely before eating, so make sure that, when you and your buddies are cooking over the Shabu-Shabu pot, you allow it to cook thoroughly in the broth. It should be opaque and firm.
2.) If you can't find a suribachi/surikogi, or you want to take a shortcut to sesame sauce, you can go to a Middle Eastern deli/market or to a health food store and get plain tehina, or sesame paste. Make sure that the only ingredient in your tehina is sesame seeds. You combine the tehina with other ingredients.
3.) That rice porridge sounds like a really good day-after-the-party breakfast. Especially if the party also entailed a little bit too much sake, shochu or soju. ^^
4.) I gotta do one of these myself now that Kitchen Stadium Panorama City is presentable again. Dibs on Yakisoba, a delicacy you might have seen on such anime as Otaku no Video, All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku, and many others. I will also mention how to deal with leftovers of this yummy dish...the Japanese way of making leftover Yakisoba is quite interesting.

Donald here. My answer is three for sure, possibly more.

The ones I definitely go to every year are AX, Anime LA, and now PMX.

Lately (for the last two years) I've been able to make it up to FanimeCon; whether or not this will hold, I don't know. It all depends on finances and free time, which so far this year aren't looking terribly good. But miracles have been known to happen.

Other than that, there are a few smaller local cons that I make it to every once in a blue moon (MikomiCon, etc.), but it all depends on time and money. Although apparently now there's also a small anime convention on the central coast (in SLO) which apparently started last year and I didn't even know about it. I somehow wound up on their press release list because I started getting PR emails for their event this year. I may check it out, since it's just a one-day event so there's no real big hotel or food expenses, driving up to SLO isn't horrendously expensive, and registration is probably pretty reasonable, so ehh, I'll probably check it out.

The big three for me are AX, Anime Los Angeles and PMX. If it wasn't for the fact that AM2 was being programmed up against AX I might have decided to go, because it's going to be attended by a lot of people I know.

In some respects there is a backlash forming against AX. It's sort of like the backlash against San Diego Comic-Con: SDCCI is too big, too industry-dominated and requires a lot of money to "do." The same criticisms can be leveled, to a lesser extent, against AX. The Anime "industry," however, is hardly in as good of shape as the big entertainment corporations that dominate SDCCI, AX is an order of magnitude smaller than SDCCI (at this point) and one can "do" AX on a shoestring better than SDCCI. Let's face it: San Diego is a tourist trap kind of town.

Anime Los Angeles is more like "old home weekend" than AX: it's smaller and more manageable. And even though the LAX area is kind of sketchy, it's not as sketchy as Downtown can be if you wander into the nastier areas. I'm hoping PMX decides to stay in Pasadena because it's a really good convention town, but apparently the Pasadena Hilton and PMX wasn't a good fit...the con was already too big for the venue. There IS the Pasadena Convention Center, though. It's pretty sweet.

Hi,
thanks for doing this report :) however, I noticed that you made a comment about not much new anime being used in the amv contest. Actually the second amv in the action category was all about Toaru Majutsu No Index.

Poodles are nice goggies. Real bright. Srsly. Mark Segal had a couple in the time I've known him. Weird attempt at a French accent on Francis, though. New seiyuu needed, stat. Glad it wasn't what I had feared when first I saw the title. C'est si bon!
